4 BIOGRAPHY
Graduated from the Fashion Department of the Academy of Fine Art in Łódź, she painted pictures and designed objects of applied art. Then she began to designe jewellery, props and ornaments for films, TV and fashion studies. She took part in the fashion shows of „Moda Polska” and „Telimena” and had also her own exhibitions of designed forms in Po- land and abroad.
Then, fascinated by the transitory beauty of nature, she began to fix in metal the fragile forms of insects and birds: butterflies, spiders, dragonflies, peacocks of more and more increased size, giving them the names of famous persons of music and literature. In that way she created her own world of insects and birds enchanted in spacial objects. And at last she depict- ed in metal her new vision: the robes - the world of fashion of different historical periods and cultures. In these she reveals the charm and characters of the famous women of history. Her works are exhibited in Mazovian Museum in Płock and she shows her new works in many art galleries in Poland and abroad.
And here is what she says about her own works: „Neck- laces are my favourite jewellery forms mainly because of their size and a deeper, secret meaning reflected in the titles of some of them (?): The Great Evening, The Waterfall, The Storm. After I had hung them on the wall or a board, I realized that they could as well be interior decorations because of their size. That was the climax of my creative research in metal-work, enabling me to express myself the most fully. The discovery has given rise to my dragonflies, peacocks, butterflies - all becoming the SPATIAL OBJECTS. I play with them and with the material they are made of: brass, glass, shells and perspex. There is something per- verse in creating frail and delicate things (quite like natural insects) of materials that are apparently hard, extremely different from natural ones. I am fascinated by rendering subtle nuances in metal: the lacy wings of a dragonfly, peacock feathers, the dust on butterfly wings, antennae, cobweb. I draw and paint in flat wire, wound metal bands, wire net, metal rings. Brass, in which I execute my objects, is a semi-precious metal that may be wonderfully fash- ioned: polished like gold, patinated, bent,
twisted and spun. Nature is very dear to me – I fell part of it - and acts as a source of inspiration to me...”
Barbara Munzer urodziła się w Łodzi i tam ukończyła studia w Państwowej Wyższej Szkole Sztuk Plastycznych. Dyplom- w zakresie ubioru i biżuterii w 1965 roku. Po studiach malowała obrazy i projektowała grafikę użytko- wą,wkrótce zaczęła też projektować i wykonywać biżute- rię i rekwizyty do filmu, telewizji i domów mody. Powstały wtedy całe zestawy ozdób do kolekcji„Mody Polskiej”(udział w pokazach w latach 1968, 1970-75) i „Telimeny” (udział w pokazach w latach 1969-73).
Uczestniczyła w wielu wystawach zbiorowych, w kraju i zagranicą, miała szereg pokazów autorskich m. in. w Łodzi, Warszawie, Krakowie, Płocku, Amsterdamie, Arnhem, Bochum Dusseldorfie, Essen, Borken. Z czasem, zafascyno- wana ulotnym pięknem natury, zaczęła utrwalać w metalu kruche owady ( motyle, pająki, ważki) w coraz większych rozmiarach, nadając im imiona znanych postaci ze świa- ta muzyki i literatury. Tak powstał świat owadów zaklętych w obiektach przestrzennych.
Potem tworzy nowe wizje z metalu – szaty, świat mody kobiecej różnych epok i krajów. W sukniach tych oddaje urok i charakter słynnych postaci kobiecych. Okazało się, że jej biżuteria może być nie tylko atrakcją poka- zu mody lecz także doskonale zdobić wnętrza.
Prace Barbary Munzer znajdują się w Muzeum Mazowieckim w Płocku oraz w kolekcjach prywatnych, w kraju i zagranicą. A oto co sama mówi o swoich pracach („Mój artystyczny życiorys” – katalog do Wystawy.
„Ze wszystkich form ozdobnych najbardziej upodobałam sobie naszyjnik...(który) z czasem osiągnął rozmiary tak imponujące, że zawieszony na ścianie zaczął żyć własnym życiem. Odnalazłam swój własny język i nowe możliwości głębszego wypowiedzenia się w tej dziedzinie. Tak narodziły się ważki, pawie, motyle – OBIEKTY PRZESTRZENNE. Przekora podpowiada mi tworzyć rzeczy, które w naturze są kruche i delikatne, z materiałów twardych, krańcowo prze- ciwstawnych naturze. Wcale nie czuję się obrażona i nega- tywnie sklasyfikowana, gdy mówią, że moje prace to czysta secesja. Uwielbiam złotnictwo Rene Laliquea i Carla Farber- gea, wnętrza Mackintoscha, rysunki i obrazy Beardsleya, Klimta, Muchy. Uwielbiam klimat tego czasu – fin de siecleu- w którym narodziły się: Art. Nouveau, femme fatale, kobieta- ważka, kobieta-paw, kobieta-sfinks, atmosfera tajemniczo- ści, arabeska linii, kolor witraży. Może stąd w moich pracach przewaga imion kobiecych: Maria Stuart, Sarah Bernhardt, Madame Pompadour.”
